Tony Bishop, Senior Vice President for Platform and Ecosystem Strategy of Digital Realty Trust, announced his aim to drive Digital Realty Trust’s evolution to become a platform company at its MarketplaceLIVE event in New York City.
Hybrid IT controls
Data is being generated outside of the cloud; it’s being generated outside of the legacy data center, according to Biphos. “A company needs centers of data exchange to enable business workflows that utilize that data. They are where the data is collected and stored but also where cloud services and enterprises’ systems can access it for analytics or other types of processing,” he added.
Bishop explained this new strategy as a strategic shift from being “campus and asset-centric” to interconnecting the entire platform globally:
If it sounds a lot like what Equinix is doing, that’s because it is – at least the interconnection part. Some aspects Digital has had all along and some it’s adding now set its platform model apart.
The company designed data center deployment has five everyday use cases. First, it is a network hub used to rewire the network. Second, it plays a role as a control hub by implementing hybrid IT controls. Next, it is a data hub optimizing data exchange. And finally, its SX Fabric provides global interconnection workflows. Notably, it adds an SDN overlay to service-chain multi-cloud and B2B application ecosystems.
Furthermore, at the end of October, Digital Realty Trust dealt with a major European player, Interxion, which has 53 data centers in 13 of the biggest European markets. With this acquisition, the company aims to be stronger in Europe.
