Hierarchy among executive roles can depend on the company structure. For example, a CMO’s and a VP of marketing’s duties are very similar. But in general, CMO is considered more senior than the VP of marketing. In most organizations, the only executive above a CMO is the CEO.

Similar to other C-level positions, a CMO role requires solid managerial skills along with marketing-related ones. A CMO is expected to have leadership skills, exceptional communications skills, an understanding of data analysis tools, lead the team in an ever-changing environment, experience with marketing tools for market research, data analytics, product branding, visual communication, and public relations. Most organizations expect their CMOs to coordinate their marketing campaigns across both traditional and modern channels. Strong digital and social media knowledge is also required for some organizations.

A CMO’s salary can depend on their qualifications, experience, location, and the organization’s size. In the U.S. CMOs are making approximately $90,000 to $320,000 annually. The average base salary of a CMO is approximately $175,000 annually.
