Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) definition & meaning
Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) can be defined as the administration of cooling, power, and server capacity in a data center. DCIM software covers both IT equipment and supporting infrastructures such as power and cooling systems. The main goal of DCIM software is to help prevent equipment problems that lead to downtime.
Gartner’s definition for DCIM is “tools that monitor, measure, manage and/or control data center utilization and energy consumption of all IT-related equipment (such as servers, storage, and network switches) and facility infrastructure components (such as power distribution units and computer room air conditioners.”
All organizations at least need to invest in a DCIM tool in order to have a cost optimization initiative, according to Gartner. In general, there are two categories of DCIM software: monitoring/automation and planning/implementation.
While DCIM software under the monitoring and automation category provides user-configurable thresholds for alarms on physical devices, the planning/implementation category allows IT managers to deploy easily new equipment and make easier data center changes.
In terms of benefit, all types of DCIM software gives the ability to run efficient data center operations and improve the capacity of planning and utilization.
