Private Cloud

what is private cloud?
Home / Glossary / Private Cloud

Private Cloud, also known as an Internal Cloud or Corporate Cloud, is a cloud computing environment that combines the benefits of cloud computing, such as elasticity, scalability, and ease of service, with the advantages of the on-premise infrastructure, including access control, security, and resource customization. In a private cloud, all the hardware resources and software are completely dedicated to a single customer.

Large organizations mostly prefer private cloud due to security concerns. It also enables organizations to meet their regulatory compliance requirements. Organizations can also prefer using the private cloud as a part of a hybrid cloud environment, allowing them to move workloads between private cloud and public cloud environments to suit their needs.

How does the private cloud work?

Private cloud is a single-tenant environment, which means that all the resources are completely dedicated to a single customer. All the resources in the service can be accessed by only one customer, which is referred to as isolated access. In most situations, private clouds are hosted on-premises in the organization’s data center. However, they can also be hosted on an independent cloud provider’s infrastructure or hosted in a rented offsite data center.

Private cloud architecture uses the same technologies as other cloud solutions, including virtualization, management software, and automation. Private cloud customers can take responsibility of manage everything itself, or outsource it to a third-party service provider, partially or completely.

Benefits of private cloud

The most important benefit of private cloud is that it offers full control over hardware and software choices, unlike private cloud. Private cloud customers can buy and install the hardware and the software that suits their needs. The full control also allows private cloud customers to monitor the entire system and access control. Private cloud customers can benefit from all the advantages of cloud computing without sacrificing security, control, and customization. It also makes it easy for organizations to meet regulatory compliance requirements.

What are the types of private cloud?

There are four types of private cloud:

  • VPC stands for “Virtual Private Cloud” combines the scalability of a public cloud with a secure private cloud, hosted remotely by a public cloud provider.
  • Another type of private cloud is Hosted Private Cloud, which refers to an offsite private cloud service. The third-party provider is responsible for hosting and managing the cloud infrastructure.
  • Managed private cloud is also a type of private cloud that adds features of public cloud systems into a private cloud deployment, making it easier for organizations to manage the system.
  • An On-premise Cloud will provide you with the option to host a cloud environment internally. It requires an internal data center to host the cloud server.

What is an example of a private cloud?

The most popular examples of private cloud are the services provided by a major vendor, such as HPE, VMware, Dell, Oracle, and IBM. For example, HPE’s private cloud offerings include the Helion CloudSystem hardware, Helion Cloud Suite software, Helion Managed Private Cloud, and Managed Virtual Private Cloud services. Oracle’s solutions include its cloud platform, infrastructure, applications, lifecycle management tools, integration services, and managed cloud services.

What are private cloud providers?

The biggest private cloud providers are Amazon Web Services, NetApp, Cisco, Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, Dell, VMware, and HPE.

Advantages and disadvantages of the private cloud

Pros Cons
✔ Private cloud offers very predictable performance due to its single-tenant nature. ✘ Private cloud is one of the most expensive solutions, and it comes with a hefty cost.
✔ It enables organizations to comply with strict regulations. ✘ If the organization is responsible for the management of the system, it requires hiring highly-trained professionals to maintain the private cloud.
✔ Private cloud provides full control over the hardware and software, allowing customers to install the devices and the software that suits their needs. ✘ It is harder to scale up the private cloud than public cloud providers or virtual machines.
✔ With hybrid integration, allows you to move workloads between cloud services.
✔ The private cloud also provides full visibility on the system.
Advantages and disadvantages of the private cloud

What is the difference between public cloud and private cloud?

The most significant difference between private and public clouds is that the public cloud is a multi-tenant environment, unlike the private cloud. Thus, a private cloud is generally more secure than a public cloud. In the private cloud, all hardware and software are dedicated to a single user which lowers the risk of breaches and unexpected performance drops. For better performance, most large organizations are using hybrid cloud solutions, which are combinations of private and public clouds.

Is public cloud or private cloud better?

The best method is the one that suits the needs of an organization. An organization can prefer private cloud to deploy its cloud applications, however, if a public cloud vendor offers a very similar application for a lower price, it would be a waste of money and time for the organization. The most important approach should be finding the ideal solution for the most affordable price while considering security precautions.

In most situations, end-users and small to medium-sized businesses prefer public cloud solutions, because of their low price and they don’t require technical knowledge. For large organizations that give weight to security and employ highly trained IT professionals, private cloud or hybrid cloud solutions can be a better solution.
