Major ASP.NET web hosting company, SmarterASP.NET went down yesterday because a ransomware attack hit the company and encrypted more than 440,000 customers’ data on the servers. The attack also hit the company itself. The company’s website was down almost the entire Saturday. SmarterASP.NET said they are currently restoring the customers’ data but it is still unknown if the company paid the ransom demand or restored the data from the backups. But many customers still don’t have access to their data or accounts.
Backend databases are also hit by the attack
The backup data of the customers’ using the company’s app backends is also affected by the attack. According to the Twitter posts company, the file extension of the files that are breached by the hackers is changed to .kjhbx. The company also shared the text file they got from the hackers, demanding ransom for the encrypted data.
During similar ransomware problems that happened to other hosting companies, it took weeks to restore all the customers’ data, due to the size of the files. Although if the company can pay and restore the data faster, this issue will affect the reputation of SmarterASP.NET in a negative way.
