What is Tag: AlmaLinux OS?

AlmaLinux is a free and open-source Linux distribution created by CloudLinux. AlmaLinux was announced shortly after Red Hat’s decision to discontinue the development of CentOS. AlmaLinux is a 1:1 binary compatible RHEL fork and CentOS replacement.

The distribution was named Project Lenix at first, but the company decided to change the name to AlmaLinux shortly after. The word “Alma” means soul in Spanish and it comes from the Latin word “Almus”, which means “nourishing, kind”. It symbolizes the Linux community as the soul of Linux.

The Beta version of AlmaLinux was released on February 1, shortly after Red Hat’s announcement. CloudLinux published the first stable release on March 30. The company also announced a $1 million annual sponsorship for the project which will last until 2029.

AlmaLinux offers an effortless switch from CentOS, with zero migration downtime. CloudLinux also created the AlmaLinux OS Foundation to take over its development and governance in March of 2021.
