What is Alphabet Inc?

Alphabet is a California-based technology conglomerate holding company. Alphabet is the world’s third-largest technology company by revenue and is considered one of the world’s most valuable companies. The company was established as a parent company for Google and former Google subsidiaries. Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the two co-founders of Google are co-founders, controlling shareholders, board members, and employees of Alphabet. Subsidiaries of Alphabet are Calico, CapitalG, DeepMind, Fitbit, Google, Google Fiber, GV, Intrinsic, Sidewalk Labs, Verily, X, Waymo, and Wing. However, Google always remained the umbrella company for all the internet-related subsidiaries, which includes Android, YouTube, and Google Search.

Alphabet is established after Google’s CEO, Larry Page’s announcement on the Google Blog, to create a new public holding company as a part of Google’s restructuring plan. During the restructure, Google moved its subsidiaries to Alphabet, to narrow Google’s scope. Page stated that the reason behind the reorganization plan is to make Google “cleaner and more accountable and better”. Larry Page became the first CEO of the holding company, who was the CEO of Google until then. Sundar Pinchai became the CEO of Google after Page’s transition to Alphabet. In December of 2019, Larry Page and Sergey Brin resigned from their executive positions and Sundar Pinchai became the CEO of the parent company.

Larry Page stated that the origin of the name, Alphabet is coming from its meaning, which is a collection of letters, which is also the core of how Google indexes with Google search. Eric Schmidt, a former Google CEO, stated that the inspiration for the name came from the then Google’s one of Germany office’s street name, which is ABC-Straße.
