What is Amazon Web Services?
Amazon Web Services, or AWS for short, is a cloud computing service, launched by the e-commerce giant Amazon in 2006. Amazon Web Service’s origins can be traced back to 2002, but the first public official announcement was made in 2004 on the company’s blog. When it was launched back in March of 2006, it only offered Simple Storage Service (S3) and Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). Shortly after, the company also added the Simple Queue Service (SQS). When S3 and EC2 were launched in Europe in 2009, Elastic Block Stores went public and Amazon CloudFront, a content delivery network (CDN) became a part of AWS offering. Another important milestone also happened in 2009 and AWS announced the Virtual Private Cloud service.
Shortly after, AWS became the most popular service in the field, against important competitors such as Google and Microsoft. With the rapid growth, the company decided to create its own event in 2012 and the first AWS developer conference was held in Las Vegas. AWS still holds a yearly event since 2012. Along with its major clients, AWS gained the trust of the U.S and signed a private cloud contract with the CIA that worth $600 million in 2013. AWS also launched RedShift in 2013 and two years later the company has admitted that RedShift is the fastest-growing product in the company history.
In 2015 and the following years, the company announced multi-billion dollar revenues annually and the expected growth rate was almost 50% for the next year. In 2015 AWS launched Snowball, which is a 50 terabyte appliance designed to help large enterprise customers to easily migrate large amounts of data to the AWS by shipping the appliance. Also in 2016, AWS released Snowmobile, a truck full of hard drives with 100 PB capacity and offers 1 Tbps transfer rate. In 2016, AWS hit $10 billion in revenue for the first time. AWS now offers more than 100 services and launching new ones frequently. For a long time, it held almost 50% of the market share. The latest research shows us the company’s estimated cloud services market share is still higher than 30%, which makes it the industry leader by far.
