What is American Tower?

American Tower is an American real estate company that owns and operates wireless and broadcast communications infrastructure. Headquartered in Boston, American Tower offers solutions and services to deploy and support wireless networks in 24 countries located on six continents.

Founded in 1995, the company was formed initially as a unit of American Radio Systems. American Tower’s parent company, American Radio, was sold to CBS/Viacom. American Tower became a separate company in 1998. The Company goes public under the New York Stock Exchange as AMT. With growth and acquisitions, American Tower launched its operations in Brazil and Mexico in the following years. Following the expansion in South Africa and Gana, the Company reached the historic milestone of 50,000 communications sites and launched operations in Uganda and Germany in 2012. American Tower acquires the exclusive right to 11,448 wireless communications sites from Verizon Communications, Inc.

The company currently operates edge data centers in 6 locations in the U.S. and a metro data center in Atlanta. To make wireless communication possible everywhere, American Tower continues its expansion with acquisitions. In 2020, it launched operations in Canada and Australia with the InSite Wireless Group, LLC, adding approximately 3,000 communication sites, primarily in the U.S. and Canada. American Tower was named one of the World’s Most Admired Companies in 2021 by FORTUNE magazine.
