What is DigitalOcean?

DigitalOcean is a cloud infrastructure provider headquartered in New York. The company provides cloud services to help users to deploy scale applications that run on multiple computers with its data centers around the globe. DigitalOcean managed to be one of the biggest hosting companies in terms of web-facing computers.

Ben and Moisey Uretsky, wanted to create a product that could combine the web hosting and virtual servers, after founding managed hosting business, ServerStack in 2003. Uretskys founded the company, which provided server provisioning and cloud hosting for developers in 2011. The next year, Uretskys met co-founder Mitch Wainer, in a response to a Craiglist job listing and the first beta product of DigitalOcean was launched in January of 2012. During that year, Jeff Carr, and Alec Hartman also joined the company.

In 2012, DigitalOcean also accepted into TechStars startup accelerator in Colorado and the founders of the company moved to Boulder, Colorado to improve the product. When the program was ended, the company managed to sign up 400 customers and launch around 10,000 cloud server instances. In 2013, DigitalOcean became one of the first companies that offer virtual machines with SSD. During the same year, the company launched its first European data center located in Amsterdam. The following year, DigitalOcean also continued expanding with the launch of its Singapore and London data centers, in 2015, expanded in Toronto, and in 2016 continued the expansion to India.

In 2018 the company launched its Kubernetes-based container service. A few months later Mark Templeton, former CEO of Citrix, replaced co-founder Ben Uretsky as the CEO. The following year, the company announced that Yancey Spruill, former CFO and COO of SendGrid appointed as the new CEO to replace Templeton. The company has 3 offices in New York, Cambridge, and India along with 12 data centers around the world.
