What is HackerOne?
HackerOne is a hacker-powered platform provider that connects organizations with penetration testers and cybersecurity professionals. The vulnerability coordination and bug bounty platform works closely with the global hacker community to reveal the most relevant security issues of its customers before exploitation. The company, headquartered in California, is one of the first crowd-sourced security companies that utilize cybersecurity researchers in this business model.
The company was founded by Alex Rice, Jobert Abma, Michiel Prins, and Merijn Terheggen in 2012 after Abma and Prins managed to find security vulnerabilities in 100 high-tech companies. In 2015, the bug bounty platform had pinpointed approximately 10,000 vulnerabilities and paid more than $1 million in bounties. The same year, the company launched a Vulnerability Coordination Maturity Model, to codify some reasonable minimum standards on how organizations handle vulnerability reports.
Hackers earned $40 million in 2020 alone from the platform. The company has paid $100 million to the hackers in bounties as of May 2020. Nine hackers from the platform have earned more than $1 million dollars since 2019. HackerOne also has offices in London and the Netherlands. The company also has an online course that primarily focuses on penetration testing services with security certifications, including ISO 27001 and FedRAMP authorization.
