What is HostGator?

HostGator is a Houston-based hosting solution service provider, with an additional presence in Austin, Texas and several international offices throughout the globe. The company offers, shared, WordPress, VPS, and dedicated hosting plans, and an easy-to-use website builder.

The company was founded in October of 2002 by Brent Oxley. Oxley was a student at Florida Atlantic University then. While establishing the company, he was trying to decide to name his company either hostgator.com or gatorhost.com. Then finally named the company HostGator and registered the domain on 22 October 2002.

On the 1st of February 2003, the company had 112 active customers. Exactly 1 year later, this number was raised to 1,031 active users. HostGator decided to move its original office from Florida to a new office building in Houston, Texas. The same year, the company also opened its first international office in Canada.

In 2008, HostGator was ranked 21 in the Inc. Magazine’s fastest-growing companies. The company also reached 100,000 customers in the middle of 2008, with the second hundred thousand occurring in September of 2009.

In 2012, HostGator was acquired by Endurance International Group (EIG) for $300 million. After the acquisition, the company accelerated its global expansion. EIG launched local HostGator sites in various countries, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, Turkey, and Mexico.
