What is IBM?
International Business Machines (IBM), is a global technology company that provides hardware, software, cloud-based services and cognitive computing. IBM was found in 1911 In New York State by Charles Ranlett Flint. IBM that offers punch card was renamed to IBM in 1924. In 4 years, the IBM Service Bureau is created to help companies who can not afford to buy IBM machines. The IBM Type 805 International Test Scoring Machine, magnetic type that introduces the world to the idea of digital storage and marks the transition from punched-card calculators to electronic computers are some of the inventions made by IBM. In 1956, the first self-learning program was written by Arthur L. Samuel, who programs an IBM 704 to play checkers and learn from its own experience. It is considered the first demonstration of the concept of artificial intelligence. 6 years later, IBM and American Airlines launch the first computer-driven airline reservation system.
In 1969, IBM built the computers and wrote many of the software programs for the Apollo missions, landing Lt. Neil Armstrong and Col. Buzz Aldrin on the moon and guiding them back safely to Earth. In 1970s, The world’s first floppy disc, UPC bar codes invented by IBMer Norman Woodland are some of the important inventions of the company.In 1980s, The PC revolution begins with the debut of the IBM Personal Computer, the smallest and most affordable computer to date. Following years, IBM Deep Blue supercomputer defeated the best chess player in the world. Supercomputing at IBM began in 1954 with the invention of the Naval Ordnance Research Calculator. In 1961, the IBM 7030 was the world’s first transistorized supercomputer. In 2018, the Summit supercomputer boasts the most powerful processor on the planet.
