What is ICANN?

ICANN that was formed in 1998 coordinates Internet’s identifiers across the world to reach another person on the Internet. It is a not-for-profit partnership of people from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable, and interoperable. Its mission is to promote competition and develops policy on the Internet’s identifiers.

ICANN which runs an accreditation system for registrars draws up contracts with each registry. These contracts provide a consistent and stable environment for the domain name system, and hence the Internet. After registration, the DNS provides an addressing system for the Internet. ICANN has a similar administrative role with the IP addresses used by computers as it does with the domain names used by humans.

ICANN’s role is to oversee the huge and complex interconnected network of unique identifiers that allow computers on the Internet to find one another. ICANN approves the introduction of new “generic top-level domains” to the Internet. This is a process that expands the online space available.

ICANN divides this process into three as bottom-up, consensus-driven, multi-stakeholder model. At the end of that process, ICANN’s final decisions are made by a Board of Directors that is made up of 21 members. The organization has adopted guidelines for the introduction of internationalised domain names (IDNs), opening the way for domain registrations in hundreds of the world’s languages.
