What is Magento?

Magento is a PHP-based open-source e-commerce platform. Its source code is distributed under Open Software License v.30. Its code has been downloaded over 2.5 million times, over 100,000 online stores are created on the platform, and in 2019 $155 billion worth of items have been sold through Magento-based e-commerce companies. The platform uses MySQL and MariaDB database management systems and elements of the Zend Framework.

Magento’s development was started in early 2007. The first public beta was released in the August of the same year. Magento, formerly worked with osCommerce was owned by Varien until its acquisition by eBay in 2011. In November of 2015, Magento was spun out and became an independent company with its new owner, Permira private equity. Finally, Magento was acquired by the software giant, Adobe for $1.68 billion. After its acquisition, Adobe announced that the company’s intention to integrate it into its Enterprise CMS platform, Adobe Experience Cloud.
