What is McAfee?

McAfee is an American company that offers computer security software. The company is headquartered in Santa Clara. In its early years, the company was known as McAfee Associates and between 2014 and 2017 known as Intel Security Group. Now, the company has almost 7,000 employees with more than 50,000 enterprise customers in 182 different countries and 131 security innovation alliance partners. McAfee offers various products for home, small business, commercial, enterprise, mobile, and cloud users.

McAfee was founded in1987 by John Mcafee, who left the company 7 years later. 10 years later, Network Associates was formed as a merger of McAfee Associates, Network General, PGP Corporation, and Helix Software. Intel acquired McAfee in 2011 and the company became a part of the Intel Security division.

After the acquisition, founder John McAfee said “I am now everlastingly grateful to Intel for freeing me from this terrible association with the worst software on the planet. These are not my words, but the words of millions of irate users.” In 2016, Intel signed an agreement with TPG Capital and converted Intel Security into a joint venture called McAfee. In 2020, the company and shareholders raised $740 million in the IPO, which made the company’s value $8.6 billion.

McAfee focuses on security software for PCs, mobile devices, and servers. The company’s most popular products are IntruShield, McAfee Change Control, McAfee DAT Reputation, McAfee E-Business Server, McAfee Entercept, McAfee SiteAdvisor, and McAfee VirusScan. McAfee acquired IntruVert Networks for $100 million in 2003, Foundstone for $86 million in 2004, SiteAdvisor for $70 million in 2006, Preventsys for less than $10 million in 2006, Onigma for $20 million in 2006, SafeBoot Holding for $350 million in 2007, ScanAlert for $51 million in 2007, Reconnex for $46 million in 2008, Secure Computing for $497 million in 2008, Endeavor Security for $3.2 million in 2009, Solidcore Systems for $33 million in 2009, MX Logic for $140 million in 2009, Trust Digital in 2010, tenCube in 2010, Sentrigo in 2011, NitroSecurity in 2011, ValidEdge in 2013, Stonesoft in 2013, PasswordBox in 2014, TunnelBear in 2018, Uplevel Security in 2019, NanoSec in 2019, and Lightpoint Security in 2020.
