What is Microsoft?
Microsoft is a technology corporation that became the world’s biggest software company. Microsoft is established in April of 1975 by Harvard College dropout Bill Gates and his childhood friend Paul Allen. Microsoft’s first popular operating system was Microsoft Disk Operating System, or MS-DOS for short, that was written for IBM in 1981. MS-DOS was based on Tim Paterson’s QDOS. Gates licensed MS-DOS to IBM but decided to retain the rights. Shortly after, in 1983, Microsoft announced the iconic Microsoft Windows operating system with a graphical interface and multitasking environment for IBM computers. The company also released a mouse in 1983.
After successful operating systems, Microsoft decided to go public in 1986. In 1989, Microsoft released another product, a software package that is a collection of office programs. It already became a huge success shortly after its release. During the 90s, as the internet started gaining popularity, Microsoft added built-in features to its Windows 95 operating system, such as dial-up networking, TCP/IP and most importantly web browser Internet Explorer.
At the beginning of 2000, the company appointed Steve Ballmer as the CEO. Bill Gates had met Ballmer during his years in Harvard University. During the 2000s, Microsoft introduces its first gaming unit, Xbox and in 2012, its first surface tablet computer that ran Windows RT or Windows 8 Pro operating system. The company also released a mobile operating system, Windows Mobile OS, which is used by sellers such as HTC, LG, and Samsung. In 2011, Microsoft acquired Skype for $8.5 billion.
Microsoft is also a strong competitor in the cloud computing field. The company’s cloud computing platform Azure was announced in 2008. It allows customers to build computing infrastructure in the cloud. In 2011, Microsoft added Office 365 to its cloud platform. Microsoft is also still developing its database server solution Microsoft SQL Server. In 2014, Steve Ballmer stepped down as CEO and succeeded by Satya Nadella. Microsoft is still the provider of the world’s most popular operating system and along with its many other software and the company is a strong competitor in the cloud computing field.
