What is NextCloud?

Nextcloud offers the industry-leading, on-premises open source content collaboration platform by combining the convenience and ease of use of consumer-grade solutions like Dropbox and Google Drive. It develops software for decentralized and federated clouds as alternative to centralized cloud services.

Nextcloud was started by Frank Karlitschek and a dozen experienced open source entrepreneurs and engineers. Their main goal was to empower users to take back control over their data and communication. Through fully employee-funded and pursuing an organic-growth strategy, Nextcloud already turned profitable by the end of 2016. In one year, the company had nearly tripled to 35 employees. By January 2018,  Nextcloud had become the most sought-after Enterprise File Sync and Share solution according to Google Trends.

Nextcloud’s flagship Nextcloud Hub is a content collaboration platform that enables users to share and collaborate on documents, send and receive email, manage their calendar and have video chats without data leaks. This platform provides the benefits of online collaboration without the compliance and security risks. In addition to this, Netxcloud offers Netxcloud at home for families, students, and Nextcloud Enterprises for mission critical use. Nexcloud has also options for online offices like Collabora Online and ONLYOFFICE. Collabora Online is a LibreOffice-based online office suite with collaborative editing, which supports all major document, spreadsheet and presentation file formats and works in all modern browsers.

It is estimated that over 250.000 Nextcloud servers are online and no other on-premises content collaboration platform comes close in terms of installed base.
