What is Qualys?

Qualys is one of the first SaaS security companies, with strategic partnerships with the most popular cloud providers, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and the Google Cloud Platform, and managed service providers, and also consulting organizations. The california-based company was the first to offer vulnerability management solutions as applications through the web by SaaS model.

Qualys, a founding member of the Cloud Security Alliance, is trusted by more than 19,000 global businesses in more than 130 countries. The Qualys Cloud Platform and its applications aim to help organizations simplifying their security operations and lower the cost of compliance by automating the auditing, compliance, and protection for IT systems and web applications.

Qualys, founded in 1999, launched QualysGuard in the December of 2000. It is one of the first companies in the vulnerability management market. Philippe Courtot, an angel investor, became the company’s CEO and the chairman of the board in March 2001.

Qualys released the QualysGuard Intranet Scanner in 2002. The product was capable of automatically scanning LANs for vulnerabilities and searching for an available patch. The next year, the company published a web-based tool that can scan, map, and identify possible vulnerabilities in networks, FreeMap.

In 2008, the company extended its scanning capabilities, with the release of QualysGuard Policy Compliance, to collect IT compliance data and map the information into policies to document compliance for auditing purposes. Qualys also release QualysGuard Web Application Scanning, a service for application scanning.

In 2010, the company enhanced its security offerings with QualysGuard Malware Detection Service, which aims to scan and identify malware on websites and Qualys SECURE Seal to allow websites to show its users that the website passed Qualys’ security scans. Qualys also introduced Qualys BrowserCheck that enables checking browsers and plug-ins for vulnerabilities, the same year.

The following year the company launched its open-source web application firewall project in 2010, named IronBee. A few years later, in 2012, the company decided to go public with the symbol QLYS and raised net proceeds of $87.5 million.

Since the IPO, the company continued to introduce new solutions in the security field, including QualysGuard Web Application Firewall, Cloud Agent Platform, Qualys AssetView, and ThreatPROTECT and acquired the network analysis assets from Nevis Networks, NetWatcher, and software assets of 1Mobility.
