What is Squarespace?

Squarespace is a New York-based website building and hosting company. Its platform allows users to create websites easily with templates and drag-and-drop features. The company also added e-commerce tools, domain services, and analytics to offer an all-in-one platform. Squarespace began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in 2021.

Squarespace’s history was started in Anthony Casalena’s dorm room while he was a student at the University of Maryland. in 2003. After participating in a business incubator program at the university, Casalena launched the service as a drag-and-drop website builder. The company received its first funding from Casalena’s founder, a $30,000 seed fund and a small grant from the university. When Casalena graduated in 2007, the company was making $1 million annually. After he moved the company to New York and hired 30 employees in 2010, it received $38.5 million in its first round of venture capital funding.

Since its launch, millions of websites were created with the Squarespace platform and the company has almost 1,200 individuals. The platform has more than 3 million subscriptions as of December 2020. The latest funding in 2021 valued the company at approximately $10 billion.
