What is Yandex?
Yandex is a Russian company mainly known for its search engine but offers more than 70 internet-related services and products. Yandex provides services including transportation, search and information services, e-commerce, navigation, mobile applications, and online advertising. The company is registered in the Netherlands, however, the company’s founders, most of the team, and headquarters are located in Russia. Yandex is Russia’s largest technology company and the second largest search engine.
Yandex’s roots trace back to 1990. Arkady Volozh and Arkady Borkovsky founded a company that develops MS-DOS-based software, named Arkadia. In 1993, the company became a subdivision of Comptek International, which is also founded by Volozh in 1989. 1993, Arkady Volozh and Ilya Segalovich started working on a search software, which is named Yandex. The name stands for “Yet Another Indexer” with a Russian bilingual pun. The company launched its search engine in September of 1997. In 2000, the team decided to incorporate Yandex as a standalone company.
Yandex has offices in 17 different countries. The company also opened Yandex Labs in Silicon Valley in 2008 and in Istanbul in 2011. The company launched its own online advertising network in 2001, a music streaming service named Yandex Music, and an English-only search engine in 2010. The company also introduced its personal assistant, Alisa for Android, iOS, and Microsoft Windows operating systems in 2017, The company also introduced the tests of its autonomous cars in 2018.
