DDoS attacks have been a straightforward type of attack for a very long time. The total increase in the previous quarters this year was due to an increase in the number of cybercriminals. Also, the growth of smart attacks that focused on the application layer has a vital role in cybersecurity.
Smart attacks decreased to 28%
In the third quarter of 2019, the share of smart attacks in all DDoS attacks decreased to 28%. This change may be due to an increase in DDoS activities. The first months of summer were extremely quiet, with the vast majority (53 percent) of the DDoS attacks taking place in September. According to Kaspersky statistics, 60% of the attacks were prevented this month. Successful ones targeted the schools and electronic magazine sites.
The average duration of smart attacks did not show a significant change in the second quarter of 2019. Moreover, the average period of all attacks had a minimal amount of decrease. According to this, it is assumed that the number of short-term attacks increased in the third quarter.
