Cybersecurity firm Trend Micro announced that a rogue employee sold data of thousands of customers. According to the blog post published by the company, rogues stole the data, such as customer names and phone numbers from the customer support database. Hackers started calling the customers, claiming to be employees of Trend Micro in August.
Suspicious phone calls
After a brief investigation, Trend Micro discovered that it was not an outside breach, and the employee responsible for selling the data is found. Since then, around 70,000 customers were notified about the incident. The employee is fired, and the police are involved.
Trend Micro also wrote on the company’s blog post:
That said, we hold ourselves to a higher level of accountability and sincerely apologize to all impacted customers for this situation. Based on the current status of our investigation, we believe that all of the consumers who were potentially affected have already received individual notices from Trend Micro, but we will continue to investigate and provide further notices in the event that any further affected customers are identified.
